After both teams have been defeated ugly the day before, both teams had to win this duel, not just in order to prevent them from going down to Group B, but to please their own fans.
Austria started well in doing this, shooting out a two-goal lead just after seven minutes. Germany started slightly weak, but took the fight and dominated the match more the more it lasted. They were credited by a goal in 20th minute.
Germany surivived two short-handed situations at the beginning of second half and started to battle the match again. They dominated the match even more having several great chances to score goals but struggled with Austrians fantastic goalie, Andreas Böhm. In the 31st minute, they tied the score and were two goals up after fourty minutes - but their lead had to be much higher in that time.
Austria came back in the match quite well in the last period, but after Germany shot their firth goal, their spirit broke completely and they got four more ones in a very rough period which Germany controlled all the time but the first some ten minutes.
